Olive Branch held a special half-term club this week for foster children who arrived in the UK as Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC). The event aimed to celebrate their heritage, acknowledge their journeys, and provide a well-deserved opportunity to relax and have fun.
The day began with introductions, followed by an interactive activity where they used twine on a large world map to illustrate their journeys to the UK.
This simple but powerful exercise helped them connect, overcoming language barriers and finding some common ground through shared experiences.
Held in the Olive Branch Children & Young People room, the day featured a PlayStation 4 with FIFA and Gran Turismo, allowing the youngsters to enjoy some friendly competition. A Scalextric racetrack added to the excitement, and the day was rounded off with some Domino’s pizza.
Judging by the laughter and engagement and one exhausted youngster nodding off on the journey home, the event was a resounding success.
The entire day was planned and delivered by Olive Branch’s dedicated Children & Young People team, who are committed to supporting these resilient young people.
Many of the youngsters have faced immense hardship before being taken under the Olive Branch family tree.
Joanne Sharples, Director of Olive Branch, reflected on the event:
“The journey through life can be faced with many challenges. For some, these challenges exceed what can often be expected.
Today was a chance for our incredible young people to share their journeys, build connections, and simply enjoy the half-term holiday. Their resilience is inspiring, and we are honoured to be a part of their journey."
This initiative is one of many ways Olive Branch continues to provide support, community, and a sense of belonging for children who have endured difficult and traumatic experiences.
